About the Live-Action Adaptation

Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, known for his work on Kenshi Yonezu’s music videos (Kanden, KICK BACK), and scripted by Ayako Suzuki, the live-action 5 Centimeters per Second will debut in Japanese theaters on October 10, 2025.

The original anime, released in 2007 by Makoto Shinkai, tells the bittersweet story of childhood friends Takaki and Akari, separated by life circumstances but bound by unspoken emotions. Through three interconnected chapters, the story explores love, distance, and the passage of time.

With its stunning visuals, expanded cast, and special events leading up to release, the live-action film aims to bring a new emotional depth to Shinkai’s classic romance.
